De havezate Mensinge bie Roon lag der weer stil bie, stief in 't ies van de grachten en wit van de sneej (HvS).

Het Mensinge bos is onderdeel van de havezate Mensinge in Roden. Havezate Mensinge - die tot 1985 werd bewoond en in particulier bezit was - is één van de meest boeiende landgoederen van Drenthe en dateert van 1381. Een havezate is van oorsprong de woning van de eigenaar van een landgoed.
Mensinge was aanvankelijk het leengoed van de bisschop van Utrecht. Havezate Mensinge wordt omringd door grachten en weilanden. Het landgoed is gelegen aan de rand van uitgestrekte bossen in Natuurreservaat Mensinge dat voor het publiek toegankelijk is.
Het hart van het natuurreservaat wordt gevormd door het Mensinge- en Sterrenbos.

Oorspronkelijk was er geen bos bij de havezate. In de achttiende eeuw is Jan Wilmsonn Kymmell - een van de vroegere bewoners van Havezate Mensinge - begonnen met de aanleg van de bossen.
Ze zijn nu eigendom van Staatsbosbeheer die ook het onderhoud uitvoert. De bossen bestaan uit loofbomen en naaldbomen waardoor het Mensinge Bos nu een gevarieerde begroeiing kent. Het Mensinge bos omvat ook nog een zeer oorspronkelijk stuk heidegrond: het Moltmakersstuk. Het oude landgoedbos is ongeveer 300 hectare groot en heeft een groot parkeerterrein.
In het gemengde beukenbos graast een kudde Schotse Hooglanders.

De route loopt door het bos maar ook door het gebied waar de Hooglanders lopen.
Honden zijn in dit gebied toegestaan mits aangelijnd. Het gebied waar de Hooglanders lopen, betreedt u op eigen risico. De route door het bos kan op bepaalde delen behoorlijk modderig zijn. Echter ook op de heide kan het behoorlijk nat zijn. Dus wandelschoenen (of zelfs laarzen) zijn na regen geen overbodige luxe.

De route van ongeveer 4-5 kilometer wordt weergegeven door enkele coördinaten; er zijn echter meerdere routes (veelal omwegen) die naar een volgende coördinaat kunnen leiden.

Hier kun je eventueel de auto parkeren en waypoint 1 bepalen.

Waypoint 1: zoek uit hoeveel jaar het Mensinge bos minimaal bestaat en trek dat getal af van de Oost coördinaat

Waypoint 2: langs de waterkant van de gracht staan bomen.
De hoeveelste letter uit het alfabet is de eerste letter van deze bomensoort? Vermenigvuldig dat getal met 10 en tel dat op bij de Oost coördinaat
N 53° 07.457 E 006° 25.855

Loop aangekomen bij Waypoint 2 (= een driesplitsing) richting zuiden, ga helemaal aan het einde rechtsaf. Loop ongeveer 30-40 meter en bepaal waypoint 3.

Waypoint 3: tel het aantal ruiter-te-paard-bordjes dat je hier ziet.
Vermenigvuldig dat getal met 20 en tel dat op bij de Oost coördinaat
N 53° 07.200 E 006° 25.863

Waypoint 4: bij de ingang van de heide (bij een groot metalen grondrooster) hangt een waarschuwingsbordje.
Tel het aantal letters van de bovenste twee regels.
Trek dat getal af van zowel N 53° 07.034 als ook van E 006° 26.591. Op deze coördinaten vindt je de cache.
(Om zeker te zijn van de juiste ingang is achter op een van de twee infobordjes het antwoord vermeld!)
De stash is een kleine metalen ammobox.
Vanwege een kwetsbaar natuurgebied is het niet toegestaan maar ook niet nodig om over hekken of afrasteringen te klimmen om de stash te vinden.

Loop op de weg terug eens via coördinaten N 53° 07.483 E 006° 26.661. Hier vind je de grootste boom (in omtrek) van de provincie Drenthe.

The Mensinge forest is part of the manorial farm Mensinge in the city of Roden. The farm - until 1985 owned and inhabited by a private person - is one of the most fascinating farm-lands of the province Drenthe and was founded in 1381.
In the beginning a manorial farm was the residence of the owner of a farm-land. Intentionally the Mensinge was a feudal-estate of the bishop of Utrecht. The manorial farm is surrounded by moats and meadows and is situated on the edge of a large complex of forests. The forests are open to the public.

In the beginning the manorial farm was not surrounded by forests. In the eighteenth century owner Jan Wilmsonn Kymmell started with the laying out of the forest. At this moment the forests are the property of “Staatsbosbeheer” which is at this moment responsible for the maintenance. A piece of original moor is enclosed by the Mensinge forest. The Mensinge forest comprises about 300 hectares and a herd of cattle (Scottish Highlanders) graze in part of it.

The track is mainly situated in the forest but at the end you may encounter the Highlanders.
In that part of the forest entrance is at one’s own risk. Dogs are allowed, but only on a lead.
The track through the forest and moor can be pretty muddy on a rainy day, so wear boots or outdoor shoes. Happy hunting!

Waypoint 1: Determine how many years the Mensinge forest already at least exists and substract that number from the East coordinate only.

Waypoint 2: Along the waterside of the ditch you find trees.
What’s the name of these trees (in Dutch). Determine which letter in the alphabet the first letter of the tree’s name is. Multiply that number with 10 and add the result to the East coordinate only

Arriving at Waypoint 2, walk south; turn right at the end of the path. Walk about 30-40 meter and calculate waypoint 3.

Waypoint 3: count the number of horse-riding signboards that you here see. Multiply that number with 20 and add the result to the East coordinate only

Waypoint 4: At the entrance of the moor you find a rectangular warning board.
Count the number of letters of the upper two lines.
Subtract that number from N 53° 07.034 and from E 006° 26.591.
The stash is a small metal ammo box. Due to the vulnerability of the reserve it’s not allowed (and there’s also no need) to climb over the fences in order to find the stash.

Suggestion: on your way back to the parking place walk via the coordinate N 53° 07.483 E 006° 26.661
Here you find the largest tree (in diameter) of the province of Drenthe.
